Motivation can destroy you. Motivation is a spy. It is a mental ninja. It seems like your greatest ally and friend. But don’t be fooled. It is a thief in the night.
Yes, motivation can be a great short term solution. But you are in this for the long haul. There will be days, weeks, months maybe even years that motivation eludes you. Some will say “If I can just get motivated, THEN I will be successful.” “If I can just find the motivation to workout, I would be great.” Motivation is fleeting.
Motivation is like a drug. It gives this fantastic high and you feel like you can conquer the world. That you can do anything! Motivation may last a while but it will always, ALWAYS leave you at some point. It will leave you in despair. It will leave you complacent, stagnant, motionless, actionless. It will leave you sitting on the couch and watching TV while others are grinding.
You don’t need motivation. You need discipline. Some people will tell you, “You can’t lose motivation. Don’t lose your drive. Don’t lose your passion.” It’s easy to say. But you will lose it. It happens to 100% of people. Discipline is the true key to success. When you don’t feel like working out, the person who relies on motivation, doesn’t workout. When you don’t feel like studying for the test. The undisciplined plays video games. What do you do? What do you do when the motivation leaves? Are you stagnant? Or are you disciplined to GET IT DONE regardless of how you feel? Discipline grinds while motivation leaves. Discipline is putting in the work when you don’t feel like it. Discipline is doing the right thing when no one is watching. Discipline will set you apart from the motivated. Now, Motivation is good as long as you have the discipline to back it up. Motivation alone; however, will send you on a roller coaster ride full of highs and lows. Discipline will keep you going in those low times. Discipline is the foundation on which everything stands.
How do you obtain discipline? It’s simple. You choose to have it. It’s not out there hiding in the bushes waiting for you to find it. It’s an action that you choose. Choose to have discipline in your life.
